1 MARCH 2017 – Self Injury/Harm Awareness Day

This is an international event which helps to raise awareness and understanding of self harming, which is often stigmatised and misunderstood in the mainstream.  This can lead to isolation and loneliness for the people who self harm and a feeling they cannot reach out for help.

People self-harm for a number of reasons and are expressing deep distress which cannot be articulated verbally.  It might be as a result of something they have done or had done to them, or because of issues they cannot cope with; there is no rule of thumb.  It is a coping strategy to manage emotional hurt & psychological distress.
